How To Keep Your Kids Entertained On A Rainy Day

One of the biggest challenges of parenting is keeping your kids entertained - especially as they get older and will let you know every five seconds just how bored-out-of-their-mind they are. However, while playing outside is always a great option, when the weather is not on your side, your options can become limited rather quickly.

With that in mind, here are some great ways to keep your kids entertained on a rainy day!

Watch a sporting match.

While you may have been relegated to spending time indoors, your favorite sports team might not have the same luxury. As a result, you could spend some time together as a family by checking out some live tv streaming services and watching your favorite team from the comfort of your own home. Be sure to have plenty of snacks on hand!

Bring the cinema into your home.

A movie day is another excellent way to keep your kids entertained (and quiet) on a rainy day - but this doesn’t necessarily mean a trip to the cinema is in order. Instead, you can recreate the movie experience at your home! Simply choose a family-friendly film to watch, such as  Sing 2 and Clifford the Big Red Dog, and have fun creating your own cinema stubs or tickets. You could also spend some time in the kitchen making delicious movie snacks, such as fresh popcorn!

Do a spot of reading.

As a parent, the more you encourage your child to read the better. Not only will this help them in school, but reading can also support them in developing their emotional intelligence. This is because it helps them learn more about the world around them. As such, you should always encourage reading during their free time, whether they pick up a fictional fairytale or browse the latest national geographic books.

Head to a museum.

Staying out of the rain doesn’t necessarily mean staying at home (so long as you pack an umbrella). As a result, a trip to a local museum could also be an excellent option for your family. Much like reading, this trip is the perfect blend of family fun and opportunities to learn something new. Many children prefer museums over other educational activities as they provide a more hands-on learning experience than they receive in the classroom, where they learn about history through textbooks. Also, most museums are free to enter, meaning it's kind to your bank account too! You should also keep an eye out for any museums that are related to your kid's specific interests - such as sports, science, or cinema!

Get crafty.

Arts and crafts activities are another way to keep boredom at bay when your child’s usual activities are postponed - and the best thing about this is that there are many, many different kinds of crafts for you to choose from. For example, you could simply hand out some paints, pens, and paper and let their imagination run wild. This could be a great way to pull together some homemade gifts for any friends and family members whose birthdays may be coming up, as they always mean so much more than anything you can buy at your local Walmart.  Alternatively, you could put their creativity to the test by trying out something new, such as making a homemade lava lamp.

Play with them.

The greatest joy of childhood is that you’re able to use your imagination more than you can as an adult. As a result, you could lean into your child’s more imaginative side by simplifying playing make-believe with them. For example, you could imagine that you are spending the day on a desert island or entering the world of their favorite movie. Not only is imaginative play a lot of fun, but it's also essential for your child’s emotional and educational development.

Give them some downtime.

As adults, we’re often reminded about the importance of rest and relaxation in our daily lives. After all, rest allows us to fight stress and anxiety while also encouraging us to prioritize our needs. However, rest and relaxation are just as important for kids as they are for adults-  meaning you could use this as an opportunity to give your kids some much-needed downtime. Instead of scrambling for something to do, give them the choice of how they want to spend their time. If they want to simply kick back and do nothing, that’s fine! If they’d rather do their homework, that’s fine too - simply let them find something that relaxes them.
