Things You Need To Do When In Santorini Greece

Things You Need To Do When In Santorini Greece

If you are looking for a little bit of luxury – then Santorini is definitely a go-to destination. This Greek island has become incredibly popular in recent years for people who have a penchant for the finer things in life. It’s often used as a romantic retreat, or just for some simple rest and relaxation. We have outlined some of the things that you most definitely need to experience when in Santorini.

Watch the Sunset from Oia

One of the reasons that Santorini is deemed so romantic is that it has beautiful sunsets. The sunset in Oia – is arguably the most famous sunset in the world. It has an incredibly unique view that you won’t find anywhere else – and is an unforgettable experience. If you watch the sunset from the ruins of Agios Nikolaos Castle – you will see that there will be crowds of people joining you to view the skyline. If you do one thing on your trip to Santorini, this should be it especially if you are on a romantic getaway with your partner.

Go on a Boat Trip to the Volcano

The volcano is one of the greatest attractions of Santorini and is where many visitors flock to as to experience part of the Santorini history. The volcano is still active to this day and lies in the Aegean sea. It is an amazing sight to see and shouldn’t be missed on your visit. Boat trips don’t only include visiting the volcano itself; you can also go swimming in the springs of the volcano! It’s an exceptional and unique experience – and will allow you to look at Santorini with fresh new eyes.

Take a Dip in an Infinity Pool

Whenever you see a picture of Santorini – there is usually an infinity pool somewhere in the scene. They are so famous that a top search on search engines these days is “Infinity Pools in Santorini”. Most people will now include that as part of the experience. A common myth is that you need to find a hotel that has one of these – but there are also some fantastic villas out there that have infinity pools Santorini based too. There’s nothing like looking out at the scenic views of Santorini from an incredible infinity pool.

Taste the Local Cuisine and Wines

As the island is known for the volcano – there are foods there that have a unique taste to them that you won’t find anywhere else in the world, so soak it all in while you can. In order to enjoy a truly authentic experience of what the island has to offer, make sure you visit one of their traditional taverns. You will find exquisite delicacies such as tomato fritters, Greek salad with capers, fava and more. Santorini isn’t only famous for its food – but wine too, and it’s actually the most popular local product. There are some fantastic wineries in Santorini, which is the perfect place to sample everything they have to offer. As well as getting a tasting, those of you who are interested in wine will also get some education as to how they produce the wine.

Try Cliff Jumping

Ammoudi is a small port in Santorini. It isn’t a beach – but it’s where lots of people gather for swimming. The waters are crystal blue – and has beautiful surroundings. For a memorable experience – you will often find people jumping off the high rocks. The best part is that while – you will be looking at the beautiful cliff face of Oia, which is stunning. There is lovely food to enjoy there too.

Visit One of Santorini’s Castles

If you are in the mood for some culture – you could pay a visit to any of the five castles there are in Santorini. You can find these in the rather picturesque, quaint villages: Pyrgos, Emporio, Akrotiri and Oia, which is the same village that has the best view of the sunset. You can take photos within the towers, or else you can walk around the land and debris. This is perfect for sightseers who are looking for a little bit of culture.

Pay A Visit to the Archaeological Site

While you are at Akrotiri visiting the castles – you may also want to stop by the archaeological site. Here you will get to see some of the excavations of the prehistoric settlement. The town is still in good condition – and you can actually walk through the debris. It has a great history behind it so it will be a great break up to your day if you have spent most of the day at the infinity pool! There are also some fantastic historical findings to be enjoyed at the Museum of Prehistoric Thera.

Enjoy More Scenery at the Prophet Elias Monastery

The Prophet Elias Monastery looks a bit like a fortress and also has a bell tower in place. The reason the views are so fantastic is that it’s the highest point of the entire island of Santorini. You can explore the beautiful panoramic views of Santorini at your leisure, and it’s yet another great spot to enjoy the sunset. Make sure you take your camera to take pictures of the view.

Drop Past Red Beach

The beaches tend to look a little different in Santorini than they do anywhere else due to their volcanic nature. The red beach is one of the most visited and photographed beaches in Santorini and has gorgeous blue waters. The reasons that this particular beach has the name “Red Beach” is due to the distinctive colour of the cliffs that surround it. It’s not just visited due to the views – it’s also a great snorkelling spot for those of you who like to dive deep into the waters.

If you are planning on giving Santorini a visit soon – make sure you have some of these ideas on your checklist and make the most of your trip away.

My hubby has alwas wanted to visit Greece. I think the cliff jumping sounds so fun, but I'm not sure I'd have the courage for something like that. The boat to the bolcano sounds amazing!
