How To Recycle Old Paint With PaintCare In Oregon!

Having recently repainted our kitchen, living room, garden shed, and a few other choice spots around the house, my husband and I managed to find ourselves surrounded by old, unneeded house paint. Everything from the paint itself, to primer, stain, and varnish, we had it all! And as responsible Oregonians, we wanted to ensure they were disposed of in an environmentally friendly way. But with very few options for recycling our old paint, we turned to the PaintCare program founded right here in Oregon!

Getting its start in July 2010, the Oregon paint stewardship program now offers 170 drop-off sites in Oregon alone! The program is so successful it's been replicated in 7 other states and the District of Columbia and is gaining more traction with communities across the country! Drop-off sites consist of paint retailers (paint, hardware, home improvement stores) that have volunteered to take back paint. These various PaintCare sites accept house paint and primer, stains, sealers, and clear coatings (e.g., shellac and varnish) even if it is more than 30 years old. Because of the “PaintCare Fee, ”which is added to the purchase price of paint sold in Oregon, there is no charge for dropping off paint at a PaintCare site!

For more information about PaintCare, I encourage you to visit their website! You can also look for local drop-off locations, or learn more about the Oregon Paint Stewardship Program by checking out their very informative brochure! Be sure to also connect with PaintCare on Facebook and YouTube!
