While there are several common parasites that can plague our furry loved ones, fleas and tapeworms are two important ones. Yet despite just how common these two parasites are, many pet owners do not know how to prevent a flea infestation let alone what to do if their pet and home become infested. Often considered seasonal parasites, fleas are amazingly hardy pests that can survive the most challenging conditions in their immature stages and have an uncanny ability to infest locations where they are protected from the harsh elements of nature. Thankfully, Virbac® SENTINEL® SPECTRUM® chewable tablets provide your pet with the year-round protection they need from fleas, tapeworms, and the other common parasites!
About a month ago I published a post titled, "Protect Your Dog From Parasites All Year With Vibrac Sentinel Spectrum!" in which I asked pet owners to complete a brief reader survey about fleas and tapeworms so before I go too much further into parasite protection, I'd like to share some statistics gathered from that survey:
- 80% of respondents said that heartworm protection was either a High or Very High priority to them a pet parent.
- 84% of respondents said that flea protection was either a High or Very High priority for them as a pet parent.
- 79% of respondents said that they provide their dog flea prevention all year long whereas 20% said that they only provide flea prevention during the spring and summer months.
- 70% of respondents said that a dog can contract tapeworms from ingesting just one infested flea.
- 90% of respondents said that tapeworm segments can be found near a dog's anus, in feces and/or where he lives and sleeps.
While SENTINEL SPECTRUM does not kill adult fleas, it does contain a unique ingredient called Lufenuron that stops flea eggs and maggot-like flea larvae from developing into adults - targeting the majority of the flea problem thus preventing re-infestation and preventing infestation before it starts! To begin the process of parasite protection, I encourage you to schedule an appointment with your veterinarian to discuss if a prescription for SENTINEL SPECTRUM is right for your dog. Before speaking with your veterinarian, I highly recommend taking some time to read over this informative pamphlet so you can prepare any questions or concerns you might have.
