JOBS OF THE FUTURE: UNDERSEA MEDICAL RESEARCHER

Ctitethya crypta doesn’t look like much. This blob-like sea sponge sits at the bottom of the ocean in warm Caribbean waters, usually covered with sediment. But hiding inside this unlikely creature are two chemicals that have been used to develop multiple medicines, including one that became the first ever drug to treat leukemia, a form of cancer. It was the first approved cancer drug to ever come from the sea. But experts think it will be far from the last.

The ocean holds some of the last unexplored places on Earth. All kinds of unusual chemicals are hiding there—and scientists think some hold the secrets to curing deadly diseases. In the future, medical researchers will swap lab coats for wet suits and dive in search of new medicines.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Many drugs have their origins in nature. Half of the top 10 most commonly prescribed medicaions in the United States come from animals, plants, or microorganisms, including treatments for high blood pressure, diabetes, and arthritis. But the oceans — which hold 99 percent of the livable space on this planet — are a place we have hardly even begun to look.

Already, scientists from all over the world are searching the seas to find new chemicals that could be useful to humans. They don scuba gear and plunge into the water to collect samples of marine organisms like algae, sponges, sea urchins, and corals. Over the past 30 years, scientists have already extracted more than 20,000 new substances from creatures like these, and some are currently undergoing scientific testing to see if they could make good medicines. In the future, researchers will dive even deeper into the world of marine medicine, visiting largely unexplored places such as deep-sea vents with the mission of saving lives on the surface.

SOUND INTERESTING?
Marine medical researchers will need a background in biochemistry, a field that involves concepts from both biology and chemistry. They will also need an understanding of marine biology to know how and where to focus their search. And of course, they’ll need an adventurous spirit to take the plunge!
