How Do I Know If I've Chosen a Good Personal Injury Lawyer?

The only thing worse than hiring a lousy personal injury lawyer is realizing you hired one too late. On top of having to deal with the aftermath of the unfortunate incident that led you to hire them, you now have to figure out how to get yourself out of the mess you’ve created. That’s a lot of extra stress you don’t need right now, and more so, money you most likely don’t have.

The good news, though, is that you can easily avoid all of these headaches by doing your homework before hiring a personal injury lawyer. Today we’re going to talk about some red flags you should keep an eye out for when shopping around for a personal injury lawyer. Read on to learn what some of them are.

Lack of professionalism

You wouldn’t ask your buddy to finish your basement for you--unless they were a pro, that is. When you need to fix a severe problem, you need a professional with the expertise, experience, and conduct that will deliver the results you’re after. Any lawyer that is late to meetings or other appointments doesn’t return your calls, makes important decisions without consulting you first, or doesn’t file required documents on time is a lawyer to be avoided entirely. A lack of punctuality or urgency on the client’s behalf is a huge sign that you’re better off working with an attorney who can extend the basic professional courtesy.

Not a nice person

It doesn’t matter how successful or experienced a lawyer is if they don’t treat you well. Not only will it make your life more complicated than it needs to be, but your concerns about your case might not get fully heard or understood, which could end up costing you a lot of money in the long run. As it should be with any professional, choose a lawyer who exhibits kindness, integrity, transparency, and empathy. These essential markers of a good person are also reasonable indications that the attorney in front of you will help make the entire legal process as easy as possible for you. If a lawyer is ever rude to you or dismissive of your concerns surrounding the case, walk away immediately.

No referrals

Anything but positive reviews about the attorney you’re researching is probably not a good thing. Even though the adage ‘no news is good news’ is usually pretty accurate, a lack of any reviews about the attorney whatsoever is a sign that they lack the experience and clients to prove their competence and reliability. While choosing an earnest yet inexperienced lawyer isn’t always a bad thing, try to go with an experienced lawyer with good reviews if possible. Cross-compare attorneys on legal review websites like Avvo, which rates lawyers according to years of licensure, hourly rates, and misconduct records.

Fortunately, the attorneys at Derrick Law Firm are the experts when it comes to personal injury cases. Having been in the personal injury law business since 1991, they excel at helping their clients get back on their feet and take their lives back. 1. Some personal injury lawyers offer free consultations. Any personal injury attorney worth her/his weight will be able to tell you if you have a winnable case after providing an initial consultation. Make calls, ask questions and find an attorney who will hear you out
