4 Essential Nutrients Your Dog Needs

Dogs need a balanced diet, just like humans. This means they require an even distribution of essential nutrients. Nutrients can help their bodies remain healthy for as long as possible. While all nutrients are beneficial, some carry more weight than others. So, here are the most important nutrients for your dog to get on a regular basis with their meals:

Water

Did you know that around 70-80% of a dog’s body mass is made up of water? It’s an essential component of their body and carries many functions. Mainly, water helps the body work properly. It speeds up processes - like digestion - aids in transporting other nutrients to cells, and so on. Always leave a clean bowl of water in an easy-to-reach place for your dog. The good thing is that they know when to drink water and when they need it. As long as a bowl is present, you don’t have to worry.

Fats

Fat is often seen as a bad thing, but it’s a key aspect of your dog’s nutrition. Fat is a source of energy, and most dogs need a lot of energy. They get this by eating foods that are high in fatty acids. The important factor is that you don’t feed them too many bad fats. We’re talking about foods high in oil, big fatty scraps from your own plate of food, and so on. Most dog food contains a good balance of fats, but fish is perhaps the best source of it.

Protein

Protein is a crucial nutrient in terms of muscle development in dogs. If you want your dog to be big and strong, it needs plenty of protein. Muscles are made up of proteins, and developing strong muscle tone prevents your dog from suffering from many injuries. Be sure to look for high protein dog food to give your dog as much of this nutrient as possible.

Vitamins

I thought about singling out one vitamin, but there are too many to ignore. Dogs require a good balance of vitamins to maintain normal bodily functions. Things like vitamin C help fight against diseases and infections. Some B-vitamins aid in the health of their coat and skin. In general, there are about seven essential vitamins your dog needs to get on a daily basis. Thankfully, most of these can be ingested through a healthy and balanced diet. So, there’s no need to look for dog vitamin supplements - which can be both costly and potentially dangerous.

As a general rule, your dog will have a healthy diet if it gets all of these nutrients. They will eat foods that fuel their body and ensure everything works properly. Of course, dog nutrition is a very interesting and important topic. If you’d like a more in-depth rundown of good dog nutrition, feel free to check out this guide here. It’s specifically tailored towards senior dogs, who generally require more attention than younger ones.

On that note, I hope you found this article helpful, and that it’s taught you how to take better care of your dog. If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Great post! We just got a new 4 legged friend. She was very malnourished when we got her, so I started her on a high fat/high protein diet, vitamins, coconut oil, and Berkey filtered water. A month later, she doesn't look like the same doggie!! She's grown so much!

  23. I used to be a rep for a dog food company. Pretty good info. I would recommend staying away from cheap dog food. Some actually use ground up peanut shells as a filler. It may cost more but your dog will generally eat less, have smaller poop to clean up and live longer.
