Keeping Your Families Safe and Happy During the Pandemic

Keeping Your Families Safe and Happy During the Pandemic

The coronavirus pandemic has hit us all hard. Even those of us who haven’t contracted Covid-19 ourselves are facing a financial impact, as well as a huge overhaul in our lifestyles. Day to day routines have had to change, as families are finding themselves confined to their homes to slow the spread. This means you’re going to have to take a new approach to raising your kids for the time being. This may seem difficult. But there are various different things you can do to keep everyone safe and happy during these trying times. Here are a few to try out!

Reassure Everyone

This can be a pretty scary time for anyone, never mind kids. It’s a good idea to reassure your kids to keep their stress and anxiety levels low. Remind them that as long as they follow official guidelines (staying home, not meeting up with people they don't live with, etc.), they should be absolutely fine. Also reassure them that this will eventually pass.

Monitor Phone and Computer Use

Phones and computers are a part of day to day life for many children. Whether that’s infants watching kids’ TV shows on a laptop or teens using the internet to do their schoolwork and keep in touch with their friends. Of course, the internet can be extremely good for your kids. It’s an endless well of information and knowledge. It provides entertainment. But it can also be potentially dangerous and scary. People don’t all have the best intentions and some could expose your children to things they shouldn’t see or could begin to groom your kids. This is why it’s absolutely essential that you monitor phone and computer use. The first step to take is to put child lock or family filters on your internet. This will block any age-inappropriate content on devices using your WiFi connection. You should also try cell phone monitoring. You can find a guide for cell phone monitoring for parents here.

Provide Distraction

Lockdown can be an extremely boring time for kids - especially those who aren’t old enough to fully understand what’s going on. For the sake of their mental health and wellbeing, it’s important that you provide them with plenty of entertainment and distraction during this period. Here are a few suggestions that can help keep everyone happy and occupied!

  • Baking Cakes - baking with your little ones can be extremely fun. Help them with basic cake mixes and take care of the aspects that involve the oven. Then allow them to decorate the cakes as they please - this is the really fun bit!
  • Arts and Crafts - kids tend to love arts and crafts. Get the paper, crayons, felt tips and pens out. If you’re feeling brave, you can even bring out the glitter!
  • Films - for a relaxed day, put on a kid friendly film and all cuddle up on the sofa with some popcorn and drinks. This will keep everyone occupied for a couple of hours.

Sure, these are pretty strange times. But make the most of the opportunity to bond with your kids and do your utmost to keep everyone happy and safe!

  1. Very good tips for keeping the family together and busy. I live alone and have been reading a lot of books.

  2. Keeping busy is key. Thanks for the ideas.
